Maddy Anholt opens with drawing comparisons between herself as somebody who pays rent to a landlord with a prostitute. After revealing the eye-watering amount she has spent on rent in London over the past 10 years, she takes us through her history of choices that led to her becoming a rent girl.
The jokes are amusing, but most of them won't have you falling off of your seat. What really makes this show is that Maddy Anholt is very likeable. She engages in playful audience teasing and the response she gets is good-natured - this ends up being the funniest thing about the show.
The story of Rent Girl is all too relatable for audiences. While a lot of it is lighthearted, there is the slightly depressing undertone that for Generation Rent we are looking at people with no sense of permanence. Rent Girl is well written and very relevant.
Maddy Anholt: Rent Girl runs at Gilded Balloon until 29 August.
