BWW speaks to the creators of Pss Pss ahead of their run at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe.
Tell us a bit about Pss Pss. What was the inspiration for Pss Pss? Our shared sense of humour! The things we both found really, really, funny. Our deep love of clowning. Watching each others' attempts at life, and attempts at physicality. The humour inherent in human beings and their bodies, the absurdity, ridiculousnesses, vulnerabilities, occasional brilliance, and many failures. The characters came from us, from who we are, from how we feel in the world, but of course we are very inspired by Keaton and Tati and their physical humour.
Why bring it back to Edinburgh? Because we had such a great time in 2014 and met so many brilliant people, reached so many new audiences, and saw some many great other shows. We loved it. We made plans there and then to come back for more! We're very excited to be at Assembly Roxy.
How has audience response been so far? Wonderful. We are so happy that people love what we love to do. That the things we find really funny, make other people cry with laughter too. The audible response depends on the country - sometimes really loud and roaring laughing, sometimes really quiet and moved. It's a show for adults, we made it for them, and our best audiences are adults - they love to return to a state of innocence, and to have permission to laugh!
What's next for Pss Pss after the Fringe? We hope to continue our travels around the world with the show. We have been to all 5 continnents. But not to all countries, yet! The show seems to have universal appeal, I guess it's because in Pss Pss we start from a truth that it turns out is shared across cultures; that we all feel totally shy and useless! Hahahahah!
