BWW talks to the team behind 2016 Edinburgh Fringe show All Aboard The Marriage Hearse.
What can you tell us about All Aboard The Marriage Hearse?
It's a serio-comic look at one couple's struggle with whether there is any point to getting married in this day and age. It's a great window into how conflicting values and societal norms can get in between two people despite how much they may love each other. If you ever been in a serious relationship, married or not, you will be able to relate to it.
What was the inspiration for the show?
In my late twenties/early thirties, I watched as friend after friend got married. Then in my late thirties I watched many of them get divorced. And I also watched many friends just choose to co-habitate in a committed relationship and not get married. It made me think about the viability of marriage in our current culture and whether it necessarily is a good thing. I felt it was a worthy topic to explore.
Why bring it to Edinburgh?
Coming from the United States, a much more traditional and religious culture than the UK, I felt it might be a subject that would be received well here. When we brought our play The Inventor and The Escort here in 2013, it was received very well by Edinburgh critics and audiences and we think they liked its rejections of traditional mores. While this show is very different from Inventor in almost every respect, it does share that show's irreverence for traditional mores.
How has audience response been so far?
Unbelievable. New York audiences responded well to it. It played to sold-out houses and rave reviews in Mexico and Croatia last summer. It's been a Valentine's Day attraction at theatres in the mid-west United States in the past couple of years. And we just wrapped up a run at the Hollywood Fringe that netted us more rave reviews, three award nominations and two wins! We were nominated for Most Unleashed Show, won an Encore! Producers' Award, and our lead actress Jessica Moreno won most Unleashed Performance.
Who would you recommend comes to see All Aboard The Marriage Hearse?
I think anyone who has ever been in a serious relationship will find it very easy to relate to this show. The fact that it has done so well in the US, Mexico and Croatia suggest that it does have a universal appeal. Also, it's just a fun, funny and heartwarming show. So if you're just looking for a fun hour of entertainment, it can be enjoyed on that level as well.
