BWW:UK speaks to Jess Robinson about her new show "The Rise of Mighty Voice" which she is performing at this year's Edinburgh Fringe.
You performed at the Fringe last year - do you think you know what to expect this time?
Last year's fringe was a baptism of fire for me. I produced my debut show by myself. There was such a lot to think about (posters, PRS, PR, budgets, flyers etc.) before I could even concentrate on performing my show. This year, I'm very lucky to have Phil McIntyre producing my new show. I don't have to think about the admin side. I can focus on my show, have a great time seeing all the other fantastic shows on the fringe... oh and expect the unexpected. There's no telling what might happen in my show - thanks to my Wheels Of Sixty-Four Tunes.
What sets The Rise Of Mighty Voice apart from other cabaret shows at this years festival?
Well, it's in the comedy section of the brochure for a reason; first and foremost it's definitely a comedy show. As well as 50 impressions in the opening number, amazing musical mash-ups and vocal gymnastics, the show is really funny. There's quite a bit of stand-up between my songs as well as plenty of speaking impressions from Liza Minnelli to Mel, Sue and Mary Berry from The Great British Bake Off to Nicola Sturgeon.
Who is your favourite diva to impersonate?
Oohm it changes from day to day, depending what sort of mood I'm in. I ALWAYS have time for Billie Holiday, though. I adore her.
You also have an incredible talent for accents- is there any accent you struggle with?
Not really. Some take me longer to pick up than others. Sometimes I visit a dialect coach to make sure things are on point but most of the time I'll just record myself and listen back until I get it right.
Do you have tips for anyone visiting the festival for the first time?
Pack for all kinds of weather! One second it's blazing sun, the next there's a deluge. You'll need a raincoat, a sundress, factor 50 and snow boots. And as well as all the brilliant shows (especially mine), don't forget to have a look at Edinburgh itself. It's such a beautiful and interesting city. I love it here.
