Urinetown is a musical based around the privitisation of toilets. Due to a water shortage, private bathrooms are no longer allowed and you are required to pay a fee to use the public ones. If anyone is found to be relieving themselves outside of the bathrooms then they will be sent to the mysterious "Urinetown" as punishment. Enter hero Bobby Strong who starts the revolution to abolish the fee to pee!
While not hugely well known, the songs are catchy and will stick in your head long after leaving the theatre. Urinetown claims not to be a happy musical and while this is fairly true, it will still make you laugh! Urinetown regularly breaks the fourth wall with excellent comedic effect. The musical is somewhat of a send up and pokes fun at the genre throughout. The cast are outstanding and the vocal performances are excellent. Graham Richardson gave a fantastic performance as Bobby Strong and was the perfect leading man for this show. The set is simple but effective and very cleverly adapted for different scenes. This production is also technically brilliant and all aspects of sound, lighting and choreography are executed perfectly.
I saw the big shiny West End production of Urinetown when it was revived recently and I would be hard pushed to pick out anything that the Conservatoire's production was lacking. Nothing has been cut down for this performance (as many Fringe shows are) and it is the full length show - complete with interval. Undoubtedly one of the finest musical performances you will see at this year's festival!
