Is it annoying if I? If my sentences never seem to? And for an hour, could you?
Welcome to Show 6, a play in which no single sentence is allowed enough words for it to make sense, but which seems convinced of its importance, for one reason or another.
Written by Mark Ravenhill and performed ably by some of the Lyric Hammersmith's 'Secret Theatre' troupe, this is a bewildering offering which seems to be about being "monged", staging some sort of coup and snogging your Mum.
As someone who spent a number of years as a member of a Youth Theatre, where every year we were given the freedom to create whatever kind of play we wished with no limits on self-indulgence and with what could charitably be called mixed results, Show 6 is somewhat embarrassingly familiar.
That's not to say it's without merit: Steven Webb is very watchable, death-dropping to the floor of the stage in various states of distress, and even manages to lend the lines he's been given some semblance of meaning thanks to a truthful, charismatic presence.
Still, there's little to take away from Show 6 other than an admiration of the colour-coordinated cushions in the seating area and, on this day at least, some gratitude that it kept you out of the rain.
Better luck next.
Show 6 runs at Summerhall until 17th August.
