Ahead of its debut at the Edinburgh Fringe festival BWW:UK caught up with writer and actress Apphia Campbell about her Nina Simone-inspired play.

What can you tell us about Black Is The Color Of My Voice?

"Black Is The Color Of My Voice" follows the fictional character, Mena Bordeux, a successful jazz singer seeking redemption after the untimely death of her father. During a three-day period of isolation without cigarettes, alcohol, or access to the outside world, Mena reflects on the journey that took her from a young piano prodigy destined for a life in the service of the church to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront of the civil rights movement. The play, written and performed by myself, is loosely inspired by the story of Nina Simone

How has the production been received so far?

The responses have been overwhelming. Audiences have been extremely supportive. When thinking about producing the show, I wasn't sure how many people would be interested in a story inspired by the life of Nina Simone. I chose to do it because I was so passionate about her work, and mine, that I was willing to take the risk because in the end, the most important thing to me was just to make it happen. The first weekend of the show audiences came in surprisingly large numbers, and the following weekend we were overbooked and had to add chairs. After the show a few people came to me with tears in their eyes. It was really fulfilling.

Is this your first visit to the Edinburgh Fringe?

Yes, it's my first visit to Scotland and to the Edinburgh Fringe. I'm ecstatic to be here and going to try my best Scottish accent all month.

What are your expectations?

By attending the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, I hope to gain more exposure for the show, and I would love to take the show on the road. Any producers, theatre owners, promoters, call me! I'm ready to bring Black Is The Color Of My Voice to a town near you!

Are there any other shows you're hoping to catch while you're here?

I'm really looking forward to seeing Running Into me from Vickie Tanner. I saw her kick starter when I was running my own. Also, I'm hoping to catch all the comedy I can. I'm looking to cry from laughter.

Previews for Black Is The Color Of My Voice start on July 30th at the Edinburgh Fringe and it runs until August 25th.
