Initially, I found the programme description of It's Dark Outside to be pretty vague and not really give you an idea of what the show is about. Having now seen the play, I realise that it is very difficult to describe.
Best classed as a western, the story is told through beautiful use of light, shadows, puppetry and music. An elderly man finds himself in a surreal world where he is a wanted criminal. Dealing with memory loss in a captivating way, he sets off on an adventure with a tent he has befriended (yes, really) as a mysterious figure tries to capture him.
Once again the Perth Theatre Company have excelled at making a touching and heartfelt piece of theatre. With no dialogue, it makes the audience investment in the story all the more impressive.
I feel as though nothing I can say will quite do justice to this beautiful piece of theatre. Judging by the number of misty eyed people leaving the studio, I wasn't alone.
It's Dark Outside runs at the Underbelly until August 26th. Timings and ticket information here.
