Edinburgh is a city bursting with exciting theatre at all times of the year and the festive period is no exception. But how do you choose what to see?
BroadwayWorld reviewer Natalie O'Donoghue has selected her top picks in Edinburgh this Christmas.
I saw this production in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago (read my five star review here) and was totally blown away by how much I loved it. This musical is heart-warming without being sickly sweet and the cast are spectacular. I'm recommending it to everybody that I come into contact with. Nativity! The Musical runs at the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh from 28 November- 2 December.
The annual pantomime at the King's Theatre, Edinburgh has long been a festive favourite in the city. Beauty and the Beast was last staged at this theatre in 1946 and they're promising to bring this classic up to date with popular songs and hilarious comedy routines. Starring King's Theatre regulars Grant Stott and Allan Stewart alongside Wicked's Jacqueline Hughes this is sure to be a hit with all ages. Beauty and the Beast is at the King's Theatre from 1 December- 20 January 2019
Making its Scottish premiere this Christmas is the wonderful feel-good musical Kinky Boots. With music and lyrics from Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots is the true story of how a boy from Northampton became the manufacturer of footwear for drag queens. Kinky Boots has been one of my favourite shows since I first saw it and I can't wait to see it in Edinburgh this festive season! Kinky Boots runs at the Edinburgh Playhouse 10 December - 5 January 2019
La Clique Noël - Part Deux has a reimagined line up of new dysfunctional artists plus a few firm favourites for this years seasonal edition, including the astounding fire eater Heather Holliday and mistress of mayhem, host Bernie Dieter (of East End Cabaret fame). The show will feature a scintillating live band and the best of the best in adult, genre-bending, new variety - in a night you won't forget! La Clique Noël - Part Deux runs at the Festival Square Speigeltent from 16 November - 12 January 2019
In 'The Miracle of Christmas Future' - magic, robots and humans come together to create a glimpse of the not so distant future, fusing age-old sleight-of-hand with the state-of-the-art tech and phenomenal illusions with futuristic science. Expect levitations, predictions, misdirection, tom-foolery, jiggery-pokery and robots. Magicfest Christmas Special runs at the Traverse Theatre 27-30 December.
