The Old Globe’s second annual Summer Shakespeare Intensive for Teens began on July 20 and will conclude on August 17 with a performance of Shakespeare’s Pericles, Prince of Tyre.  The play will be performed in English with scenes in Spanish and American Sign Language.  The performance will also be interpreted in sign language for the deaf and hard of hearing.  The Intensive is a classical acting program designed to provide an opportunity for committed high school students to refine their acting skills through a full-time, four-week course culminating in a performance on the Globe’s outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre stage.  Tickets are $9 for children and $12 for adults and are available online at www.TheOldGlobe.org, by calling (619) 23-GLOBE or by visiting the Globe Box Office in Balboa Park.

The Old Globe Shakespeare Intensive offers an exciting opportunity for high school students to take part in a challenging theater program taught by professionals in the field, while exploring classic themes from plays of the Globe’s Shakespeare Festival,” said Executive Producer Lou Spisto.  “We are also thrilled to be able to offer full scholarships to every student, made possible by the Globe’s generous education sponsors, guaranteeing that all of the students can participate.  This program is one of the many offerings that make up the Globe’s strong commitment to education and outreach to young people in the San Diego area.”

“By performing Shakespeare’s work in English and in Spanish, students can learn to embrace our community’s rich cultural heritage while learning about the Bard’s work, drawing on the Globe’s tremendous resources and reputation for classical theater,” added Education Director Roberta Wells-Famula.

The Summer Shakespeare Intensive is a rigorous acting program for students in grades 9 through 12 and provides over 100 hours of training over the course of the program.  The participants study classical theater technique, voice, movement, stage combat and more while rehearsing for a bi-lingual (Spanish/English) production of a Shakespeare play.

This Intensive provides an opportunity for serious students to explore the craft of acting with talented and well-trained mentors, and to prepare themselves for college or the professional theater world.  Program instructors include University of San Diego/The Old Globe Master of Fine Arts students, professional actors currently performing in the theater’s productions, and members of the Globe’s professional technical staff.
