Children’s Shakespeare Theatre presents the classic Romeo & Juliet
Palisades, NY – Children’s Shakespeare Theatre (CST) presents its production of The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet in Rockland County.
Romeo & Juliet performs on the following Fridays and Saturdays: February 28th, March 1st, 7th and 8th. Each performance is at 7pm, and all are at the Palisades Presbyterian Church, 117 Washington Spring Road, Palisades, NY.
Romeo & Juliet is a cautionary tale for parents and authority figures. While many people remember the beautiful love story at the heart of the play, many forget the tragedy and violence that are also part of the tale. The traditional story of Romeo & Juliet has a parallel arc to those found in lesbian pulp magazines and novels of the 1950s: a forbidden love, rejected by their families, ending in death and despair. Despite the sad ending, people remembered the love from those novels. Our production is similarly set as a lesbian love story with a mid-century backdrop.
Children Shakespeare Theatre’s production features Maya Bornstein as Romeo, Valencia Massaro as Juliet, Beatrice Gunther as Lord Capulet, Clementine Macri as Lady Capulet, Josie Rothman as Friar Lawrence, Emmeline Zuba as Nurse, Emilia Falkner as Mercutio, Silas Bobrow as Tybalt, Sofie Barsanti as Benvolio, Jack Bieger as Paris and The Prince, Adelaide Macri as Lady Montague and Balthazar, Aaron Benjamin as Gregory and Paris’ Page, Erica Winfree as Abram and Lord Montague, and Myla Zimbler as Servingman.
Romeo & Juliet is directed by CST Artistic Director Brady Amoonclark, assisted by Megan Kip-Holden. Costumes are by Katy Bolger, sets by Heather Aveson, fight choreography by Giselle Chatelain, lighting by Michael Gnazzo, and original music by Ian Moore. Due to the violence portrayed in our production, we recommend this play for ages ten and up.
Children’s Shakespeare Theatre is celebrating its 25th season this year. Having completed the canon by producing every Shakespeare play there is, we will be celebrating at our gala this spring. Don’t miss our May production of As You Like It. Children’s Shakespeare Theatre draws children throughout Rockland, Westchester and Bergen counties. CST is dedicated to providing a nurturing and enriching environment through the performance of classical theatre, allowing children to explore, in a safe and supportive educational setting, what it means to be human.
Children’s Shakespeare Theatre, an Orangetown non-profit organization, is extremely proud to be the recipient of a generous grant from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. Support also comes from sponsors including the Jerome Robbins Foundation, Nyack Dentist Dwayne Bodie and our many individual donors.
Tickets for all Romeo & Juliet performances are $25 for adults, and $20 for children under 18. Group rates are available. Teachers attend for free. Tickets and more information about Children’s Shakespeare Theatre can be found on our website: www.childrensshakespeare.org
