(Nyack, NY) Children’s Shakespeare Theatre takes a short break from Shakespeare as we start
our twenty-fourth season and present Antigone by Jean Anouilh, Adapted by Lewis Galantiere,
a compelling classic play about questioning authority.
Jean Anouilh’s play is a tragedy inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone (441 BC) and was first
performed in Paris in 1944 during the Nazi occupation. Antigone, King Creon’s niece, decides
she must bury her brother’s slain body against the wishes of the King. The play that follows is a
stirring human drama and dialectic on the use and abuses of power and authority versus the
integrity of the individual.
CST’s production features Emilia Falkner as Antigone, the niece who goes head-to-head with
her Uncle, King Creon (played by Silas Bobrow) to bury her brother’s body. At fourteen and
fifteen years old, Emilia and Silas have a long relationship with CST dating back to 2016. They
have appeared as Titania and Oberon, and in last season’s Macbeth they played opponents on
the battlefield. For each, this is their tenth CST production.
“We connected right away,” says Silas, “maybe because we were both homeschooled.”
“We love to discuss and discover together how our characters interact,” says Emelia, “Silas is
such a fun scene partner. We are really looking forward to the challenges of this play, out of our
comfort zone of Shakespeare’s verse in iambic pentameter.”
The rest of the cast includes Brianna Seigel as Ismene, Ellie Newton as Nurse, Nora Maloney as
Chorus, Daniel Lipari as Haemon, Beatrice Gunther as Jonas- First Guard, Aaron Benjamin as Second Guard,
Penelope Duval as Third Guard, Myla Zimbler as Messenger and Colette Dickey as Page. Antigone will be
directed by CST Artistic Director Brady Amoonclark. Marco Jo Clate and Megan Kip-Holden will
serve as assistant directors.
Antigone, performed by a mixed ages group of children (ages 8 – 15), is the perfect way to
launch Children Shakespeare Theatre’s 24th Season: The Season of Questioning Authority. The
season continues with productions of Moliere’s Scapin by the Knaves (ages 8 – 13) Jan. 26 –
Feb. 3, King Lear by the Rogues (ages 14-18) Mar 15 – 23, and will end with Two Noble Kinsmen
by Shakespeare and Fletcher by the Knaves, May 10 -18, all performed on our home stage at
the Palisades Presbyterian Church.
Indoor performances of Antigone are October 6,7, 13, 14 at 7pm at Palisades Presbyterian
Church, 117 Washington Springs Rd., Palisades, NY. Tickets at childrensshakespeare.org.
