“Light Up the World” is a project that the International Union Club, a group of Cleveland High school students made possible to help raise money for kids with cancer. Students choreographed 13 dances to perform for the community.  All proceeds from tickets for the performance will go to the Children’s Cancer Association.

This project includes drama, and multicultural dances such as: samba, tango, belly dancing, hip hop, and other around the cultural rhythms from around the globe.

Earlier this spring, Sergio Velasco, Cynthia Hymelin, Seanya Pastrana and 9 other Cleveland High School students, created a dance troupe to perform for their school’s Multicultural assembly.  They worked really hard and had a great performance; but, when the performance was over they wanted to keep on dancing. That’s when they all thought, "Why not dance for a good cause?" and that’s when it all started. They gathered people and told them about the project they had in mind. Everyone thought it was a great idea and supported them. Now they want to share their skills and help kids with cancer by making their lives better.  Because Sergio and Seanya already had a great relationship with Miracle (they’d participated in last year’s Pluma Nueva program, creating and performing their original writing) they stopped by one afternoon to see if the Miracle be interested in hosting their fundraiser.  Well, of course!  The students selected The Children’s Cancer Association as their beneficiary.

The Children’s Cancer Association is a one-of-a-kind nonprofit organization bringing support, resources, award-winning programs and above all, joy to seriously ill kids/teens and their families in Oregon/Southwest Washington and also nationally. Powered by a caring community of staff, volunteers, medical professionals and donors, they offer resources, friendship and fun – creating moments of respite and hope in the midst of life-threatening illness. In 2008 alone, CCA provided services and assistance more than 28,000 times, free of charge.

They’ve named their group the International Union Club, and their goal is to become an official club next year in school and invite more people to join.  This effort will lead the students to contribute more in their community and help people that are really in need. This means that we have many more projects to come, "Light Up The World" is just the beginning of everything and “hopefully we can change peoples lives by helping them and giving them the effort they need.”
