Here are a few tips for how to enjoy your next open mic night.
A recent development at Pitt has been the opening of a new space called the Center 4 Creativity; The Understory. The Understory holds a drum kit, acoustic guitar, violin, electric pianos, and more for rental complete with soundproof practice rooms. The idea is to allow students to foster creativity through club exploration and several art forms. It's easily my new favorite space on campus.
About twice a month, the Understory holds an open mic night. As an officer in the music club, I force my friends to go to every open mic there is. The acts include and are not limited to vocalists, slam poetry, impressions, dance, and more.
Open Mic Nights are the perfect way to gain some live performance experience without too much pressure. To participate in the fun, I try to do a few songs in every set, but it takes a few steps. Here are a few ways I try to combat stage fright at an open mic.
I know the purpose of an open mic is to be "off the cuff", but having a few songs you know really well can be super helpful and make you feel a little less unprepared for your act.
As previously mentioned, open mics are extremely casual events. People are chatting, eating food, and they're just there to have a good time.Acknowledge your jitters and remind yourself that you're human. It doesn't have to be perfect, be proud of yourself for going up there.
I cannot tell you how many times I have forgotten chords on my guitar or used my phone to Google lyrics while performing. The stakes are so low at open mics and everyone is there to support you. Invite some friends, grab a comfy seat, and go for a cookie run afterwards. You deserve it, be proud of yourself.
