BIO
Connie Francis began her career performing on television and in talent shows, appearing on Startime Kids from 1953 to 1955. In 1955, she signed a recording contract with MGM Records and released her debut single “Freddy.” She recorded vocals for the films Rock, Rock, Rock! (1956) and Jamboree (1957). Her first chart success came with the duet “The Majesty of Love” (1957). In 1958, her recording of “Who’s Sorry Now?” became a major international hit, reaching No. 1 in the UK and No. 4 in the U.S. She followed with successful singles including “Stupid Cupid” (1958), “My Happiness” (1958), “Among My Souvenirs” (1959), and “Lipstick on Your Collar” / “Frankie” (1959).
In 1959, Francis released the album Connie Francis Sings Italian Favorites, which became her most successful album. During the early 1960s, she had major hits including “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool” (1960), “Where the Boys Are” (1961), “Breakin’ in a Brand New Broken Heart” (1961), “When the Girl in Your Arms Is the Girl in Your Heart” (1961), “Second Hand Love” (1962), and “Don’t Break the Heart That Loves You” (1962). She starred in films including Where the Boys Are (1961), Follow the Boys (1963), Looking for Love (1964), and When the Boys Meet the Girls (1965). She also released multiple albums in different languages between 1960 and 1964 and recorded songs in up to 15 languages. Her final top-ten U.S. hit, “Vacation,” was released in 1962, with her last top-40 entry in 1964.
In the mid-to-late 1960s, Francis continued releasing singles and albums, including Connie & Clyde – Hit Songs of the 30s (1968) and The Wedding Cake (1969). She participated in the Sanremo Music Festival in 1965 and 1967. In 1973, she released the single “(Should I) Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree?” Her later recordings included the album Who’s Happy Now? (1978), the single “I’m Me Again” (1980), and additional recordings released in multiple languages.
Francis resumed recording and performing in 1989 with the album Where the Hits Are. In 1992, she released the single “Jive, Connie,” which charted in Germany. She released The Return Concert: Live at Trump’s Castle (1996) and With Love to Buddy (1996). She continued live performances into the 2000s, including concerts in Las Vegas (2004), San Francisco (2007), and Manila (2008), and appeared in Grand Divas of Stage (2010). She published autobiographies including Who’s Sorry Now? (1984) and Among My Souvenirs (2017).
Francis retired in 2018. In 2025, her 1962 song “Pretty Little Baby” experienced renewed popularity and was re-released. She died on July 16, 2025.
