Alliance Theatre

BIO

The Alliance Theatre, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is one of the most respected regional theaters in the United States. Founded in 1968, the theater has been a staple of the Atlanta arts scene for over 50 years. The Alliance is known for producing world-class theater productions, as well as providing education and outreach programs to the community.

The Alliance Theatre has a long history of producing groundbreaking theater productions. In 1978, the theater produced the world premiere of "The Robber Bridegroom," a musical by Alfred Uhry and Robert Waldman. The show went on to have a successful Broadway run and was later adapted into a film starring Sissy Spacek. Other notable productions include "The Color Purple," which premiered at the Alliance in 2004 before moving to Broadway and winning multiple Tony Awards, and "Santaland Diaries," based on the David Sedaris essay, which has become a holiday tradition in Atlanta.
The Alliance Theatre is also committed to providing education and outreach programs to the community. The theater's education department offers a variety of programs for students of all ages, including acting classes, summer camps, and in-school residencies. The Alliance also partners with local schools to provide access to theater productions and workshops for underserved communities.
In addition to producing theater productions and education programs, the Alliance Theatre is also home to the Alliance Theatre Institute, which offers professional development opportunities for theater artists and educators. The Institute hosts workshops, masterclasses, and other events throughout the year.
The Alliance Theatre is led by Artistic Director Susan V. Booth, who has been with the theater since 2001. Booth has directed numerous productions at the Alliance, including "The Prom," which premiered at the theater in 2016 before moving to Broadway in 2018. Under Booth's leadership, the Alliance has continued to produce innovative and thought-provoking theater productions.
The Alliance Theatre is also known for its commitment to diversity and inclusion. In 2018, the theater launched the "Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab," a program designed to support local artists from diverse backgrounds. The program provides funding and resources for artists to develop new works and collaborate with other artists in the community.
The Alliance Theatre has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2007, the theater received the Tony Award for Regional Theatre, recognizing its contributions to the American theater community. The Alliance has also been recognized for its commitment to sustainability, receiving the "Green Globe" certification for its environmentally friendly practices.
Overall, the Alliance Theatre is a vital part of the Atlanta arts scene and the American theater community as a whole. Through its innovative productions, education programs, and commitment to diversity and inclusion, the Alliance continues to inspire and engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
