Trinity Preparatory School's theater department returns to the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August with their production of "The Addams Family-A New Musical Comedy."
Prior to their departure for the United Kingdom, the student ensemble will present a 90-minute fringe version of the musical in the Mandell Studio Theater at the John and Rita Lowndes Shakespeare Center on July 23, 2016.
This is the third time that Trinity Prep has been invited to be a part of the American High School Theater Festival, which showcases outstanding high school theater from North America. Previously, Trinity Prep's fine arts chair and director, Janine Papin, brought student productions of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and Leonard Bernstein's "Candide." The nominated school groups spend time in London and then travel to Scotland to participate in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the largest arts festival in the world, which takes place for three weeks every August in Scotland's capital city. Every year thousands of performers take to hundreds of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows of every variety.
"The Addams Family" features an ensemble of 22 talented students. Among them is Tony Moreno, who plays the role of Gomez Addams. Moreno recently performed on the stage of the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway for the 2016 National High School Musical Theatre Awards. He was one of two high school students selected by The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts through their Applause Awards to attend a 10-day theater intensive in New York City as a part of the Jimmy Awards and one of only 62 students from across the nation representing 31 regional awards programs. The Jimmy Award, sponsored by The Broadway League, is named in honor of James M. Nederlander, legendary Broadway theater owner and producer.
"The Addams Family-A New Musical Comedy" is based on the iconic family of classic television fame. With a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, the show first opened on Broadway in 2010 and featured Nathan Lane, Bebe Neuwirth, and Central Florida's own Wesley Taylor. The hilarious story explores what happens when daughter Wednesday falls in love with a young man from a respectable and normal family. Gomez, Morticia, and Pugsley, as well as the rest of the family, have strong feelings about the events unfolding. Singing and dancing by the living, the dead and even the undecided make for an enjoyable time for all ages. Show times at the Mandell Theater are 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 23. All tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door.
