What does it mean to be an American?

This fall, audiences at Garden Theatre will be asked to confront themes of violence, immigration, and race during the theatre's season opener of Ragtime the Musical. The production, directed by Mark Edward Smith, features music direction by Robby Stamper and choreography by Carrie Crawford.

Ragtime runs August 23 - September 15, 2019.

At the dawn of a new century, everything is changing... and anything is possible. In the melting-pot of New York City, a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant, and a daring young Harlem musician are brought together by the promise of the future. Filled with compassion, courage, and America's great historical figures, Ragtime is an inspirational musical that displays the true portrait of America.

Featuring a book by Terrence McNally, music by Stephen Flaherty, and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, Ragtime is based on the 1975 novel by E. L. Doctorow. Garden Theatre's production includes Scenic Design by Joe Klug, Lighting Design by George Jackson,Costume Design by Dan Jones, Sound Design by Anthony Narciso, and Wig Design by Louis Rego.

Garden Theatre's production will feature Brandon Martin* as Coalhouse Walker Jr., Dayja Le'Chelle Legg as Sarah, Amy Sue Lambert as Mother, Tricia Jane Wiles as Evelyn Nesbit, Michael Ursua* as Tateh, and Scarlett Rose Russo as Little Girl.

An ASL-interpreted performance will be held on September 5 at 7:30, in partnership with Signing Shadows. To deepen the audience's understanding of the musical, Garden Theatre will host a post-show panel discussion after the performance on September 8 at 2:00 pm. The panel will feature members of the cast and community and will be led by staff from the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center.
