This year’s Circle Theater Festival features PVT Wars, a poignant yet hilarious exploration of platonic male friendship. Co-directed by Michael Mekus and Chris Cavazza, the play follows three Vietnam War veterans residing in a VA hospital, seamlessly weaving together humor and heartache.
Set against the backdrop of the hospital, the veterans confront their traumas and the bonds forged through shared experiences. The play excels in finding laughter amidst sorrow, with the cast’s natural chemistry resulting in sharp comedic timing and moments of genuine emotional resonance.
Cavazza’s portrayal of Silvio, the playful jokester hiding a deeper vulnerability, is particularly striking, complemented by Zachary Mailhot’s subtly restrained Natwick and Shaun Memmel’s Gately, who adds physical comedy infused with introspection. Together, they beautifully navigate the intricate, unspoken dynamics of male friendship, balancing humor with quiet understanding.
Under Mekus and Cavazza’s direction, PVT Wars effectively harmonizes its lighthearted moments with its emotional depth, creating a compelling exploration of camaraderie. It serves as a poignant reminder of the healing power of friendship and the way laughter can flourish even in the toughest of times.
