MAKER OF WORLDS, an absurdist one-woman play with six characters by Wendy A. Schmidt, will premiere as part of the Dream Up Festival at Theater for the New City on September 2nd with consecutive performances through September 7th.
Jeri Frederickson directs versatile actress Amy Gorelow in this funny, convention-bending, female-empowering, myth-reclaiming play that ranges from comedy to pathos.
Martha is a deity who literally stirs things up while giving homemaking advice. Lately she has become frustrated with the world she's concocted and the system developed by her accountant husband whose skewed economic perspective is echoed by "all the experts" on nationwide TV.
Martha independently decides that she will melt the polar ice caps, thereby destroying a world that has no good left in it. But her yoga instructor, another deity in disguise, convinces her that she should fight the system instead. While doing so Martha has to contend with media censorship, an ambivalent administrative assistant, Rupert Murdoch, and her longtime obsession with Jim Morrison. MAKER OF WORLDS is about creativity, Capitalism and the divine in all of us.
Chicago based playwright Wendy A. Schmidt had a workshop of Maker of Worlds at Three Cat Productions last December. A staged reading of her play Veda in Time was also presented last year at La MaMa Galleria in NYC. Wendy's full length plays include Marvelous Madeleines produced by Three Cat Productions and The New Republic developed in Chicago Dramatists Saturday Series. Her ten minute play Tornado Alley was a finalist for the 2015 Actors Theatre of Louisville Heiderman Award. As literary manager of Chicago's Three Cat Productions she curates and organizes the Chicago New Work Festival and the Next Draft Series.
