Lindsay Nicole Chambers is starring as Robyn in the Off-Broadway hit show, Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man now at the 777 Theatre. The stage play is based on the 1997 book of the same name by Dan Anderson and Maggie Berman that became a best-seller and has been published in international markets; a text of the fun-filled world of foolproof moves and insider advice which could only be gathered by a charming and perceptive gay man.
In the show, the book's author, Dan Anderson, coaxes Robyn, the shy and studious professor and moderator of a book event, to follow her dreams and his sex tips to enhance her lifestyle. Chambers is in the three person cast that includes Jason Michael Snow and Andrew Brewer. This trio makes Sex Tips a bawdy and fun-filled romp that includes some audience participation.
Chambers brings an impressive theatrical background to Sex Tips and can also be seen as Gail Liner in the hit series, "Submissions Only." We asked Chambers how long she has been interesting in acting. She said, "I've been performing since I was in diapers. My dad has a picture of me dancing on a boardwalk with a bunch of people standing around watching. I was in diapers and no shirt. I also did a lot of singing along to Stevie Nicks albums while standing on my mom's bed looking into her mirror whilst wearing only a half-slip and white patent leather mary-janes. Again, no shirt. It's a wonder I don't get naked in this show (spoiler alert)."
And with this creative, early start to the world of performance, Chambers did have some mentors and people she admired in show business that influenced her career. She said, "My dance teacher from Otterbein, Stella Kane, was a great mentor for me. So supportive and challenging. She really inspired me to work hard and believe in myself. Carol Burnett and Gwen Verdon are my two idols, so I just try to act like them all the time. Annie was on television the other day and I watched it just to see Carol's rendition of Little Girls. She's brilliant."
The role of Robyn in Sex Tips has been a fun and challenging one for Chambers. "This show is fast-paced and audience oriented so it's a different show every night. That's part of what makes it so fun, seeing what each audience gives us. There are only three of us onstage, so it's challenging in that way too- keeping up the pace and your stamina."Chambers has been delighted with the cast and creative team in Sex Tips. She commented about working with them. "I worked with our director, Tim Drucker, on Perez Hilton Saves the Universe a few years ago, so I was really excited to work with him again. He knows how to get the right amount of camp and heart into a show. Matt Murphy, the writer and producer, was so collaborative and fun to work with. And, he gives us beer sometimes after the show- always a plus. Jason Michael Snow and I had done a couple readings together so we knew we were bound to be friends, it was only a matter of when. And Andrew Brewer is so hot (and sweet and funny), who wouldn't want to be in a show with him?"
We asked Lindsay Chambers if there was anything else that she wanted audience members to know about Sex Tips for Straight Women from by a Gay Man. She said, "Just come, be ready to have fun, and have a couple drinks in you!"Sex Tips is showing at 777 Theatre, 777, 8th Avenue (between 47th and 48th Street) on Mondays at 8 p.m., Tuesdays at 7 p.m., Thursdays at 8 p.m., Fridays at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $49.69 and $69.69.
