Guerilla theater is back in the East Village with BETWEEN GODS AND KINGS: A New Rock Show based on Euripides' classic greek tragedy, The Bacchae. Previews begin next Thursday, March 21 at BEDLAM (40 Avenue C).
In this twisted adaptation of The Bacchae, Sheri Sanders (Rock The Audition) tears down the house in her long-awaited return to the New York stage, as Agave, Queen Mother of Thebes. The unyielding punk rock King Pentheus is played by Jimmy Schumacher, with Jacob Shipley as the vengeful god Dionysus--both desperately fighting to hold on to power of their kingdom. Agave is trapped in between and the people of Thebes are caught in the crossfire of this epic battle. This nearly 2,500-year-old story, brought dazzlingly to life with a modern rock lens, asks how far they will go to defend their city, their family name... and at what cost?
Backed up by a live rock band led by James Dobinson (The View Upstairs) playing Neil Douglas Reilly's (Loch Lomond, Orchestrations for Rocky: Broadway, Clinton: The Musical, Stars of David) invigorating original score, the cast's performance breathes life into the venue with immersive and exciting staging that takes over every inch of BEDLAM, the bar on Avenue C owned by the Club Cumming team. BETWEEN GODS AND KINGS is bringing the vitality of guerrilla theater back to the East Village where Off-Off-Broadway was born.
The actor-musician cast and band include Nicholas Lerangis, Emily Iaquinta, Ryan James Ortega, Derrick Medrano, and Tristan Marzeski.
Executive produced by Taylor Shubert and Katherine M. Carter, music produced by James Dobinson, BETWEEN GODS AND KINGS is presented in a non-traditional space with an immersive staging. The show features an original rock score by Neil Douglas Reilly and words by Austin Ruffer and Maggie Herskowitz (Monster Prom).
BETWEEN GODS AND KINGS will be produced by Our Establishment, LLC, and Neil Douglas Reilly with Kathryn Fray. Sound Design by Kevin Heard. Lighting Design by Jonathan Cottle. Costume Design by Caitlin Cisek. Stage Managed by Abigail Strange. General Manager is Kathryn Fray.
BETWEEN GODS AND KINGS is presented in agreement with Actors' Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States.
