DETENTION THERAPY - Red Door Theatre Company

“detention therapy” is a one-act that takes place in afterschool detention, days after a classmate is brutally murdered. Each character has a lot to give and a lot to learn in the brief period of time that they have to reflect on the situation in front of them. “detention therapy” is based on true events.

JEFF -- the class clown, over weight, uses humor and practical jokes to deal with his own demons. NIKKI – the head cheerleader, runner up to the homecoming queen. Snarky and sassy, which all turns out to be a façade – she has a genuine heart and doesn’t yet know how to handle the things around her. EMILY – the homecoming queen, she tries really hard to be perfect and ends up coming across as very fake and phony. DANIEL – the nerd, tall, lanky, hasn’t quite grown into himself yet. Always carries a stack of books with him, possibly has a slight stutter BEN – sporty, athletic, gets along with everyone. He’s popular without being “popular”. Becomes emotionally numb and confused when his best friend is murdered. MR. JONES – a young, fairly inexperienced teacher, he’s a awkward socially and physically, but has a big heart and wants to help his students any way he can.

All actors must appear to be middle school aged, with the exception of Mr. Jones who can be mid to late twenties. This production is part of Manhattan Repertory Theatre’s Winter One-Act Competition. The first four performances are guaranteed and the following depend on if the production advances to semi-finals, finals, and the final-showdown. Every performance will be in tandem with three other one-acts. Due to the nature of the festival, mature, disciplined actors are a must. Divas, drama queens, need not apply.
