Basement Arts is excited to announce auditions for 'Wit' by Margaret Edson! Directed by Sam Aupperlee!
SYNOPSIS: Vivian Bearing, a renowned poetry professor, is dying of Stage-four Ovarian cancer. Wit tells the story of her final hours in a university hospital room as she grapples with death through her own memories and through the lens of her life-long study on poet John Donne. What initially seems like a dark piece, actually explores death by asking the audience to find humanity in it and even discover where we hold power over it. Rehearsals will take place October 10th-October 28th, with performances on October 29th and 30th. Character Descriptions: Vivian Bearing (F): A renowned poetry professor who is dying of stage-four ovarian cancer. The play’s protagonist and narrator. Susan Monahan (F): Vivan’s primary nurse. Not as academically minded as her peers. Jason Posner(M): A medical fellow responsible for the treatment and care of Vivian. Harvey Kelekian: Chief of medical oncology. Overseeing Jason’s medical fellowship E.M. Ashford: Vivian’s professor and mentor. Mr. Bearing: Vivan’s father. ***All characters can be played by anyone of any racial/ethnic identity. Characters not marked with a designated gender role can be played by any anyone of any gender identity Because Vivian is a very text-heavy role, Sam will be holding auditions for the role of Vivian via self tape. For your audition, please prepare EITHER a 1-2 minute contemporary monologue OR any of the three sides posted in this email/on the Basement Arts website. Tapes are due October 4th.
