THE NERD BY LARRY SHUE
AUDITION Notice: December 10 from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Runs April 6 – 29 for a total of 14 performances at The Snug Theatre. Rehearsals are typically 3-4 times per week up to 5 weeks prior to the production. We strive to use your time wisely and will only require you to be at rehearsals in which your character is needed. Tech week attendance is mandatory (Apr. 1 – 5).

Apr. 6, 7, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 at 7:30p.m. and Apr. 8, 15, 22, and 29 at 3:00p.m.
Please prepare a 1 – 2 minute comedic monologue. You may be asked to cold read selections from the script as well.
Character Descriptions:
Willum Cubbert – 34 years old. The protagonist. He’s somewhat of a struggling architect. He is very likeable but lacks “gumption”. He is in love with his neighbor Tansy, but doesn’t have the guts to sweep her off her feet. Rick Steadman saved his life in Vietnam and Willum feels as if he owes Rick his loyalty. This boils to an unbelievable end in which Willum must decide what direction his life will go.
Tansy McGinnis – Approx. 25-30 years old. Willum’s neighbor. Tansy straightens Willum’s apartment and his life. She has grown weary of this task though and is planning to move to Washington D.C. to become a TV reporter. She has some feelings for Willum but she is missing that spark from Willum to keep her in Indiana.
Axel Hammond – Approx. 30-35 years old. Willum’s other neighbor and his best friend. He’s a drama critic and has a smart aleck comment for just about everything. Tansy accuses him of being selfish and never doing “an anonymous thing to help out anyone”. Axel and Tansy once had a brief courtship 2 years prior, but both agree it was for the best that it ended. We wonder if Axel is even capable of caring about anyone but himself.
Warnock Waldgrave – Late 30’s to late 40”s. A businessman who has contracted Willum to design his new building. “Ticky” as he prefers to be called, is very gruff and seems to be angry at all times. He has a wife and child, but treats them like business partners instead of his family. Mr. Waldgrave always ends up being the brunt of the joke.
Clelia Waldgrave – Mid 30’s to mid 40’s. The wife of “Ticky”, she has a very peculiar nervous compulsion. When she gets stressed, and this is often, she must break small saucers or plates to relieve the tension. She tries to play peacemaker when things go awry but simply cannot keep up. She isn’t a very good parent either, as her child is a terror.
Thor Waldgrave – Approx. 8-10 years old. The son of “Ticky” and Clelia Waldgrave. Thor is simply a bratty little kid. Actually bratty isn’t the word for it, this child is rotten to the core. His parents bribe him with money to get good behavior. Thor has several “fits” that would make any parent cringe. He ends up getting spanked on stage.
Rick Steadman – (The Nerd) Mid 30’s. Born and raised in Wisconsin, he saved Willum’s life in Vietnam and comes to visit him in Indiana. Rick is rude without realizing it. He is uncouth and incredibly awkward. He invites himself to stay with Willum and causes all kinds of chaos while he is there. He pushes everyone’s buttons unintentionally. By the end of the play, we’ll see how far everyone will go to be rid of him.
