Show Synopsis:It’s December, 1939. Gone with the Wind is having its world premiere and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta’s German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season. Adolph Freitag, his sister Beulah (Boo), and sister-in-law, Reba, along with their nieces, Lala and Sunny – a Jewish family so highly assimilated they have a Christmas tree in the front parlor – are all abuzz about this lavish ball. Boo is especially concerned, believing it will be her daughter, Lala’s, last chance to find a socially acceptable husband. Adolph’s new assistant, Joe Farkas, comes to dinner and is surprised to find the prejudice existing in his own religious community. The family gets pulled apart and then mended together with plenty of comedy, romance, and revelations along the way.
Character Breakdown:
All characters speak with a mild Southern accent except Joe who is a New Yorker.
Adolph Freitag – a businessman, late 40’s. Down-to-earth guy with a dry sense of humor. Patient and stoic in a household of four females. Adores Sunny but has little tolerance for Lala.
Beulah (Boo) Levy – his sister and Lala’s mother, a few years older. She is controlling, sarcastic, and obsessed with status. Resents being pushed aside from running the family business.
Rebecca (Reba) Freitag – Adolph’s sister-in-law, middle 40’s. She is often oblivious to what is going on, but is more shrewd than others give her credit. Must have good comedic timing.
Lala Levy – Boo’s daughter, 20’s. Hyper, immature, living in a dreamworld. Obsessed with “Gone With the Wind.” Must have good comedic timing.
Sunny Levy – Reba’s daughter, 20’s. She is a junior at an Ivy League college. Attractive and self-assured.
Joe Farkas – Adolph’s business assistant, late 20‘s. New Yorker, good looking, and intelligent. Not college educated but has street smarts.
Peachy Weil – a visitor to Atlanta, 20’s. He is goofy, immature, obnoxious. Must have red hair (or be willing to dye hair).
