The Foreigner
By Larry Shue
The Foreigner takes place in Tilghman County, Georgia in 1980. It is a farcical comedy following Charlie, a British sci-fi magazine proofreader, who goes to Georgia on a getaway. However, due to his own shyness and a lot of miscommunication, the locals all are informed that Charlie can not speak English. Now, to not look like a liar, Charlie is forced to lean into this belief, speaking in made-up sci-fi languages to get around. But as he stays in town, he begins to uncover a deceitful plot being cooked up by some of the town's more nefarious citizens. It is now up to Charlie to save the day! All the while avoiding speaking English.
CHARACTERS:
“Froggy” LeSueur: Froggy is a friend Charlie made during his brief time in the British Army. Froggy is an old friend and serious flirt with Betty, the elderly widow who owns the inn. He’s loud, bombastic, and overwhelmingly British.
Charlie Baker: Charlie is a British Sci-Fi magazine proofreader. He is self-pitying and miserable most of the time, with a flare for anxiety. He is so shy that he would rather pretend to speak an entirely made-up language than reveal he’s been lying, even in the most serious of circumstances. Should have an extremely frantic and nervous energy most of the time, but with the ability to calm down when the situation demands it. Despite the negatives, he is a kind man going through a lot.
Betty Meeks: The elderly widow innkeeper who agrees to house Charlie during his time in Georgia. She is energetic, bubbly, and kind of ditzy, while also being an incredibly warm and gentle woman.
Rev David Marshall Lee: A charming and sophisticated young religious man on the surface, set to marry Catherine Simms, it becomes quickly apparent that in fact, David is a Machiavellian manipulator to the highest degree. Should be able to flip from the cheerful and charismatic, almost televangelist, to the slimy and cruel with ease.
Catherine Simms: A firecracker. Catherine is an heiress, soon to be wed to David Lee. She is a southern belle through and through. Prone to fits and flights of fancy, she always wants all of the attention of everyone else in the room, especially the men. Very unpredictable, her emotions can take a hard 180 at a moment’s notice.
Owen Musser: A deeply angry and deeply stupid man. Owen is a hateful bigot of a man. He dislikes anybody different than him and even has high connections in the Ku Klux Klan. However, Owen is a black man who does not realize why that’s a problem considering his hateful lifestyle.
Ellard Simms: The heart of the show. Ellard is loveable and simple. Despite what everyone around him thinks, Ellard is not dumb. He can be incredibly wise and even clever at times but has a hard time communicating his thoughts clearly. Because of this, and his trusting nature, he is often tricked and taken advantage of but he always stays looking on the bright side.
