ANNOUNCING AUDITIONS FOR THE WEDDING SINGER OCTOBER 15 & 16 AT THE BERMAN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Call for Local Actors and Singers: It’s Time To Party Like It’s 1985

The PAIJ Players (Performing Arts In the J) will hold auditions for its winter musical, The Wedding Singer, October 15 and 16 at The Berman Center for the Performing Arts.

The Wedding Singer is a musical with music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Beguelin and Tim Herlihy. It is based on the 1998 film of the same name. The musical revolves around Robbie, who sings at weddings, his failed relationship with his former fiancée, and his romance with a new love, Julia. This fabulous fun musical is romp through everything fun and delicious that the 80's had to offer. It’s upbeat, dance-filled, and laugh out loud riot.

Auditions are open to everyone over 14-years-old. Rehearsals will be Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays beginning October 22, 2017. The full rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions. Cast members are required to attend all technical rehearsals and performances, which will take place at The Berman January 25-February 2, 2018.

Audition (ages 14-adult) specifications:

ACTING: Please prepare a 1-minute monologue that best illustrates acting ability

SINGING: Please prepare 16 bars of a song that best shows off vocal abilities. The Berman prefers, but does not require, it to be from the American Songbook (musical theatre)

DANCE: Come dressed in comfortable clothes, ready to dance. Close-toed shoes (tennis shoes or dance shoes) are preferable

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS: Certain characters play instruments on stage, please check the character breakdown for specifics and notify the directorial team if instruments will be played

LIVE PERFORMANCES:

Thursday, January 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, January 27 at 8 p.m.

Sunday, January 28 at 4 p.m.

Wednesday, January 31 at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, February 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, February 2 at 8 p.m.

THE PRODUCTION TEAM:

Director: Lisa Melinn

Lisa Melinn earned a BFA in drama from the Professional Actor Training School at Syracuse University. She has taught acting, movement for the actor, and improvisation to students of all ages, for Farmington Hills Schools, The Second City/Detroit, Michigan Actors Studio, Water Works Theatre Company, Michigan Youth Theatre, Jewish Community Centers of America, and Oakland Community College’s Theatre Program. Lisa is proud to serve as the National Artist in Residence in Acting and Improvisation for JCC Maccabi ArtsFest. Lisa believes that the best performing arts teachers are those who are constantly learning; she works professionally as an actor on stage, screen, and in voice-overs. A published author, Lisa co-wrote the chapter “Action Against the Chaos” featured in Open Court’s Hamilton and Philosophy.

Producer: Elaine (Hendriks) Smith

Elaine (Hendriks) Smith is the Senior Director of The Berman Center for the Performing Arts, The JCC Ethan & Gretchen Davidson Music Festival and the PAIJ Players.

Elaine has been the Artistic Director of The Historic Gem & Century Theatres (Detroit, MI), Deputy Director of Matrix Theatre Company (Detroit, MI), the Production Manager of Commotion Entertainment and has over 25 years’ experience as a theatrical manager, designer and presenter nationwide on such production as: Say Goodnight Gracie (Lighting Designer, Stage Manager, Production Manager), Altar Boyz (Production Stage Manager), The Second City, Detroit (Stage Manager & Designer) and Trinity Irish Dance Company (Lighting Designer).

Elaine has been a proud mentor of youth at Matrix Theatre Company, Minnesota Festival Theatre, Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, The Second City, Detroit, Roeper Summerstock Theatre and The Berman. She strongly believes that to help art thrive, youth have to be educated that the arts are accessible and invaluable.
