AUDITIONS: THE LUCK OF THE IRISH
FERBURAY 27TH & FEBRUARY 28TH
Tacoma Little Theatre is holding auditions for its final production of the 2021-2022 season, The Luck of the Irish, written by Kirsten Greenidge, and directed by Lydia K. Valentine.
Auditions will be held Sunday, February 27th and Monday, February 28th at Tacoma Little Theatre. Audition appointments will be set between the times of 6:00pm-9:00pm on Sunday and 7:00pm-10:00pm on Monday in 10-minute increments. Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, March 2nd beginning at 7:00pm.
In the words of playwright Kirsten Greenidge, The Luck of the Irish is “...a glass prism: all slants and angles surrounding… different configurations of characters grappling with the dreams and hopes and choices that were made with all the greatest intentions half a century earlier.” It explores the American experience with its multifaceted and layered complexities, both past and present.
The Taylors, a wealthy Black American couple, plan to buy a home in an all White neighborhood in 1950s Boston, and—to avoid being the target of arson again—they pay the Donovans, a struggling Irish American couple, to ghost-buy a house on their behalf. Fifty years later, the Donovans confront the Taylor heirs in an effort to get “their” house back.
Moving across two eras, The Luck of the Irish considers the immunity endowed by social privilege of class, race, or gender; the pitfalls of assumed entitlement; and the universal longing for home.
Auditioners are asked to prepare a 60-second contemporary dramatic monologue, and then will be asked to perform one or two short cold readings from the script after their monologue.
ALL ROLES ARE AVAILABLE: LUCY TAYLOR (F, mid-thirties): Boston Brahmin, Black; REX TAYLOR (M, mid-thirties, older than Lucy): Lucy's husband, transplant from Northern Virginia, Black; HANNAH DAVIS (F, mid-thirties): The granddaughter of Lucy and Rex, Black; NESSA CHARLES (F, early-thirties): Hannah's younger sister, the granddaughter of Lucy and Rex, Black; JOE DONOVAN (M, very early thirties): first-generation Irish American, White; MR. DONOVAN (M, early eighties) An elderly Joe, White; PATTY ANN DONOVAN (F, very early thirties) Joe’s wife, second-generation Irish American, White; RICH DAVIS (M, mid-thirties) Hannah’s husband, transplant from DC, Black; MRS. DONOVAN (F, early eighties) An elderly Patty Ann, White; MILES (M, aged nine) Hannah and Rich’s son, Black. Ages given are playable ages, actors need not specifically fit the given age to audition. Tacoma Little Theatre practices color-conscious casting and encourages everyone to attend.
DIALECTS/ACCENTS: Hannah, Nessa, and Rich speak with a general American accent for the most part. Being black in America, however, they wear the veil well, and their speech is fluid and not inaccessibly bougie. Lucy speaks with a Boston Brahmin accent, akin to Rose Kennedy. Joe, Patty Ann, Mr. Donovan, and Mrs. Donovan speak with Boston accents. Rex has a Virginia sway to his speech. Miles has a general American accent, but he prefers to make some of his words sound cool.
TLT will require all staff and performers to show proof of having had a COVID-19 vaccination. These requirements will be in effect from auditions through the end of each particular show.
