About The Production:
Our inaugural Problem Play Project production is a remarkable new vision of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale in a bilingual world premiere adaptation! The Bard’s spellbinding tale of jealousy, prophecy, magic, and redemption, reworked by Hillsboro-native Carlos-Zenen Trujillo, transports the action away from Sicilia and Bohemia to Miami and Havana.
Bringing Latin-American magical realism to play in one of Shakespeare’s most compelling (and magical) tales, The Island In Winter is the first show in a three-year project that asks emerging playwrights of color to re-imagine Shakespeare’s Problem Plays with a diversity and equity lens.
Seeking:
Leonte
Male-identifying, 35+, Latinx heritage, bi-lingual Spanish/English.
The leader of Santa Cecilia, Leonte is a powerful man in the grip of anti-capitalist political dogma; his deep suspicion and jealousy towards his wife, Hermione, and best friend, Polisteno, cause terrible consequences for his family, his newborn daughter, and his beloved Cuba.
Polisteno
Male-identifying, 35+, Latinx heritage, bi-lingual Spanish/English.
A poet at heart, Polisteno has fled his beloved Cuba for the bright lights and fast pace of the American mainland. There, he struggles with his past, with the role he played in the death of his childhood best friend, with the jealous rage of his friend Leonte, and with how to raise his own son with a respect for Cuban heritage while surrounded by American excess.
Hermione
Female-identifying, 35+, Afro-Latina/Black, bi-lingual Spanish/English.
Hermione is the heart of Santa Cecilia; beloved by her people, and by her childhood friend Polisteno, her beauty and kindness is the envy of all. But when her husband suspects her of infidelity, Hermione is forced to make a devastating decision about her newborn daughter’s future.
