Brief Synopsis:

The cunning of Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner, Dr. John Watson, meet the wit of Oscar Wilde and the lovely, charming actress, Mr. Lillie Langtry, as they seek to solve a mystery in this exciting new play involving blackmail, theatre, love…and Holmesian villains aplenty. (comedy/mystery)

Roles: 2 women 5 men

Sherlock Holmes

30s to 50s. A cunning, ingenious (and occasionally witty) master of deduction and spotter of the obvious that others don’t see. Holmes is a gentleman and loyal friend who holds high his duty to country…he is also quite human at times. There is one scene when Holmes “plays” Mrs. Padgett, an actress readying for a role in Mr. Wilde’s upcoming play.

Dr. John Watson / Man 2

30s to 50s (can be older than Holmes). Sherlock’s friend, confidante, and a doctor in his own write, he is loyal to his friend and committed to his duty. Man 2 is an extra.

Mrs. Lille Langtry / Woman

30s to mid-40s (she is 40 at the time the play is set). One of England’s greatest actresses, The Jersey Lily, she possesses the talent, allure, charm and sentiment associated with her legend. In one scene she disguises herself in order to fool Mr. Holmes.

Oscar Wilde

30s to 50 (Mr. Wilde died at age 46): Friend to Mrs. Langtry, the famous (infamous) Irish poet and playwright. At the time of this play’s setting, he is in the process of writing one of his most well-known and beloved plays, which will star The Jersey Lily. Thus, we are privy to his thoughts and Wilde-isms that reflect his clever humor and outgoing personality during the creative process.

Mrs. Irma Tory / Mrs. McGlynn

40s to 60s. Housekeeper, respectively, to Lillie Langtry and Sherlock Holmes, as well as a secret member of Professor Moriarty’s gang. The actress cast in these roles needs to play the kindhearted housekeepers and the ruthless gang member (and frustrated actress) willing to take no hostages.

John Smythe, AKA Man / Abdul Karim / Man 1

20s to 40s (fairly open). Respectively, a Moriarty gang member; and an attendant and confidante servant to Queen Victoria. Man 1 is an extra. As a gang member, he is not the brightest bulb in the box but he can hold his own. The actor cast in these roles needs to portray characters that are well-distinguished from each other.

Professor Moriarty

30s to 50s (can be older than Holmes). The classic, criminal mastermind in every sense of the word, he is “in it” not solely for riches but for the chance to best his opponent, Sherlock Holmes. There is something about him which gives the impression that he is a violent person who does not tolerate fools or failure.
