CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
The script calls for 8 female roles (one young female) although originally it was done with 6 performers (one a drag performance). The director is open to various combinations and options.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:
TINA DENMARK (child performer)
A bright and bouncy little girl with a dark side. Ideally, she is an incredibly talented young performer (Laura Bell Bundy in the original off-Broadway cast) who can play a third grader and age a couple of years for the second act. The director is looking to cast an 8 year old but is open to casting a middle school age actress who can play 8 as long as the actress hasn't begun presenting as a mature young woman. Auditioners are encouraged to watch the movie The Bad Seed to get a sense of who Tina could be as a person. She must act, sing, and dance very well (tap, jazz, & ballet).
Age 8 - 13
All adult roles require solid comic actors and accomplished singers with some dancing.
JUDY DENMARK (Act 1) / as GINGER DELMARCO (Act 2)
Act 1: A perky 50's TV style housewife and mother to Tina. Bland and totally focused on her daughter. Trusting and gullible.
Act 2: Judy becomes an outrageous over the top Broadway Diva totally focused on herself even though she still harbors some of Judy's genuine grace - an adult Tina.
Age 25 - 35
SYLVIA ST. CROIX (historically played by male actor in drag)
Tina's agent and eventually revealed as Judy's real mother. Smart, driven, and theatrical. Auntie Mame meets Mamma Rose meets Katherine Hepburn.
Age 45 - 55
LITA ENCORE
Boorish theatre critic. Bold and brassy. Sharp tongued as Hedda Hopper and big and brassy as Ethel Merman. Adopted Judy when Judy lost her mother at a very young age.
Age 45 - 55
MYRNA THORN (Act 1)
Tina's third grade teacher 25 - 30. Former actress who now teaches elementary school and writes and directs the school musical.
Age 25 - 30
MISS BLOCK (Act 2 - often played by same actress playing Myrna Thorn)
Mannish female reporter out to get inside scoop on Ginger.
Age 25 - 30 (if played by same actress playing Myrna in Act 1) otherwise age is not critical.
LOUISE LERMAN (Act 1 - although can be played by a child, historically done as an adult playing a child.)
Tina's plain Jane, minimally talented classmate. Cast as lead in school play because parents are helping with the show.
Age 8 - 13 if played by child but age 25 - 35 if played by an adult
EVE (Act 2 - often played by same actress playing Louise Lerman if Louise is being played by an adult)
Ginger's secretary. As in All About Eve, out to take over Ginger's career and high life and, when revealed to be Louise's mother, revenge the death of her daughter.
Age 25 - 35
