Surfside Players Invites You to OPEN AUDITIONS for
RENT
Book, Music, and Lyrics by Jonathan Larson
Directed by Steven Heron
Musical Direction by Leslie Mitchell
Surfside Players will be holding OPEN AUDITIONS on Sunday and Monday, March 4 and 5, at 7:00pm for RENT, by Jonathan Larson. Our director is Steven Heron with musical direction by Leslie Mitchell. Production dates will be April 20 – May 6, 2012; if the show is popular enough we will extend the run to May 13.
Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, RENT follows a year in the life of a group of friends struggling to make it in New York City. They include Mark, a filmmaker and the narrator of the story; his former girlfriend, Maureen, a performance artist; Maureen's lover, Joanne, a public interest lawyer; Mark's roommate Roger, a musician; Mimi, an exotic dancer, with whom Roger falls in love; Tom Collins, a computer genius; Collins' lover, Angel, a street musician and drag queen; and Benny, a former member of the group who, after marrying into a wealthy family, has become their landlord. How these young East Village bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking show, winner of the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical… which now makes its Brevard County debut right at Surfside Players!
We need strong singers and expressive dancers: almost the entire show is performed in song. The main cast is 3 women and 5 men in their teens, twenties, or thirties, supported by a small tight-knit ensemble of all ages portraying many citizens of New York. All auditioners must be in high school or older. In addition, due to the strong language and mature themes of the show, auditioners under 18 must have their audition forms signed by a parent or guardian giving consent.
Auditioners should go to
http://needrent.homestead.com to become familiar with the songs they will be singing at auditions. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. You may attend both nights, but you only need to attend one.
If you’re still undecided about auditioning, watch the video of the Broadway production at:
