Story/Intent: REMEMBER ISOBEL tells the tale of an LGBT family losing a grandmother to Alzheimer's. I wanted to share this story because, having lost a grandmother to Alzheimer's myself, I know how important it is that the general public becomes educated about Alzheimer's so that they are aware of the warning signs as well as understand the full scope of the deterioration caused by the disease and its effects on family and friends. Further, with the baby boomer generation on the verge of reaching a high-risk age for Alzheimer's, it is essential that everyone understands the importance of being involved in the search for treatment and a cure before the disease reaches epidemic levels. My story follows Cate, her wife Helen, and their two sons Patrick and Ryan as they witness the slow loss of their beloved Isobel (Cate's mother) to Alzheimer's. I believe it is so important for the general public to start to see that LGBT families are really not so different, that all families experience similar joys, sorrows, successes, and hardships. It is my hope that people will identify with Cate and Helen as parents struggling to do their best for their kids, as spouses trying to adjust to being caregivers while still making time to be loving partners, and most importantly, as people in the wake of a tragedy.
