Audition Requirements:
Please prepare 2 contrasting, contemporary musical theatre songs of 16 - 32 bars each, preferably in a similar style to the show (songs FROM the show are allowed, but not recommended). An accompanist will be provided. No a capella auditions. Ideally, at least one song displays your comedic acting ability. Monologues are optional - it's your chance to show us what you got! At callbacks, we will do cold reads from the script, songs from the show, and a dance routine (so, come dressed accordingly - check the accordingly section of your closet).
Show Description:
Inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence. You won't be able to resist the spoofy fun of REEFER MADNESS. The addictive and clever musical numbers range from big Broadway-style showstoppers to swing tunes like 'Down at the Ol' Five and Dime' and the Vegas-style 'Listen to Jesus, Jimmy,' featuring J.C. Himself leading a chorus of showgirl angels. This dynamic show will go straight to your head! REEFER MADNESS is a highly stylized and satirical political commentary. It contains adult humor, religious parody, and drug use, as well as suggested violence and sexual explicitness. It therefore may be inappropriate for younger performers and audiences.
Character Breakdown:
Ages and descriptions are merely a suggestion and starting point - don't be afraid to audition if you don't feel you match. I enjoy casting creatively. Some roles may or may not be doubled, at the director's discretion. The ensemble will have plenty of opportunities to take on additional roles not listed and shine!
Lecturer - M, 25-45, A severe authority figure who warns the audience of the perils of Reefer. Perhaps has a personal vendetta against this vile weed. Plays other various roles throughout.
Jimmy Harper - M, 18-22, A wholesome, innocent, high school teenager who runs into trouble after he is lured into the dangerous world of reefer. Loves Mary Lane. Needs to be comfortable appearing on stage half-dressed.
Mary Lane - F, 18-22, Jimmy's sweetheart, a naive, virginal teenage girl, who may ultimately prove to not be nearly as innocent as she seems. Loves Jimmy Harper right back. Needs to be comfortable appearing on stage half-dressed.
Jack Stone - M, 30-45, The handsome, charming, and ruthless proprietor of the Reefer Dern, a 30's gangster movie-type.
Jesus - appears to Jimmy in a vision a couple of times throughout the show. Smooth, cocky, and sings like Neil Diamond. A real showman.
Mae - F, 30-45, An attractive, yet slightly worse-for-wear dame, the hostess of the Reefer Den. Straight out of a Douglas Sirk film. Many regrets in life and has a kind heart.
Ralph Wiley - M, 25-35, A denizen of the Reefer Den, formally a fraternity man, his college days ended long ago due to his reefer habit.
Sally - F, 25-35, A sexy and seductive resident of the Reefer Den, she possesses the libidinous soul of Mae West combined with the rat-a-tat moxie of vintage Barbara Stanwyck.
Ensemble: M, F, 18-30, Mixed group to represent Reefer Zombies, Kids at the Five and Dime, Reefer Orgy dancers, Angels, Patriotic chorus in the Star-spangled finale, and many others throughout. |
