Auditions for Rothko Drama, Red, at the Mendocino Theatre Company
The Mendocino Theatre Company announces auditions for Red, written by John Logan. This intense two-person play will be directed by Steven Siler.
Auditions will be held April 20th and 21st from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Don Murray room of the Community Center of Mendocino, 998 School St., Mendocino. Red will begin rehearsals in early August, and performs September 17th through October 25th, 2015.
In 1958, the artist Mark Rothko works methodically in his New York studio on an unparalleled commission for a new restaurant called The Four Seasons. Through the eyes of his young assistant Ken, we experience the pedantic, challenging, ferocious, and brilliant force of one of the world’s most renowned and notorious artists.
In this historically sold out play, audiences are given an inside look at Rothko’s process, including live color mixing, canvas preparation, and explosively physical painting. Written by John Logan, known for screenplays of films including The Aviator and Hugo, Red is a messy and exposed theatrical tour de force about the humanity that goes into the making of art.
Auditions will consist of prepared monologues (memorization is recommended). Please refer to the Red audition packet, available for pick up at the Mendocino Theatre Company box office. Packets contain suggested monologues and scene selections from Red to prepare for your audition, and various notes from the director. At auditions, actors may also be asked to read from the script, and are welcome to perform other pieces not from Red they may have prepared as well. Resume submissions are encouraged.

Mark Rothko: mid-50's through mid 60's
Ken: early 20's
