What to Prepare?
Sides will be emailed to you after you have signed up for an audition slot.
Choose 1 monologue for the character you’re most drawn to. The monologue does not have to be memorized but please familiarize yourself with the material enough to show physicality. We’d love to hear your best accent as well if one is listed in the character description!
Be prepared to read for additional characters if you’d like to be considered for more than one role.
Character Breakdown:
Freddy: Character age/presents as: 25-35 male presenting.
Barkeep and Owner of the Lapin Agile. Lots of physicality. Onstage for almost the entire duration of the show. Must be comfortable with improv/ad-libbing and crowd work. When it comes to love, he is maybe a little more insecure than he thought, excels at his job, salt-of-the-earth, practical, occasionally, he is exceptionally wise
Gaston: French accent: Character age/presents as: 50-65 male presenting.
Constantly on and offstage. An older gentleman. As he is sure to remind you. Has to strike a balance between good-natured and cheeky, he cannot be too sweet but also cannot be completely disrespectful, think older George Clooney-esque schmaltzy energy (or at least that’s how he envisions himself).
Germaine: Character age/presents as: 25-35 female presenting.
Onstage for almost the entire duration of the show. A waitress, girlfriend of Freddy, works at the Lapin Agile, think of a young Gertrude Stein. Sharp, witty, knows who she is and what she wants, self-assured, poised, dignified, smarter than anyone gives her credit for, bored, knows the power of her feminine wiles
**Albert Einstein: Character age/presents as: 25 male presenting.
Jovial, understanding, patient, scholarly, brilliant, competitive (when provoked).
Suzanne: Character age/presents as 19, (seeking an actor 21+ as this role also doubles the Countess and A Female Admirer) female presenting.
Sagot: Character age/presents as: 35-45 male presenting.
He is Picasso’s art dealer, a smart businessman, brusque, direct, will occasionally indulge his more fun-loving side.
**Pablo Picasso: Character age/presents as: 23 male presenting.
Larger than life, vibrant, egotistical, charming, not sincere but not unlikeable, dynamic, compelling.
Charles Dabernow Schmendiman: Any Accent or no accent, perhaps he is American. Character Age/presents as: 23-43. Can be the same age as or a little older than Picasso and Einstein. Male Presenting. A charlatan, a wannabe, possesses a lot of unearned confidence and no real talent or skill to back it up.
**The Visitor - Southern drawl. Character age/presents as: 20-30 male presenting.
Let’s just say he’s spent a night or two at the Heartbreak Hotel. He enters wearing blue suede shoes. A time traveler. Charming AND sincere, docile, demure, wise as he brings with him knowledge of the future.
**it is important to note, for those interested in auditioning for Picasso, Einstein, or the Visitor, these characters do not have to be biographically accurate, let loose and have fun, looking for big personalities, bold choices, what’s more important is that in this absurdist comedy they represent the concepts of Art, Science, and Music respectively.
Do you play any instruments? If so, don’t be shy, let us know! Proficiency in musical instruments: a bonus but not at all required!
