A hilarious family comedy.” —BackStage. Loaded with laughs every step of the way. —Star-Ledger.
Over The River… opened in 1998, and ran for 800 performances over two years at the John Houseman Theatre in New York City. It has been widely produced in regional theatres across the U.S. ever since. The author, Joe DiPietro, is the Tony Award-winning author and lyricist for the musical Memphis, as well as for his long-running off-Broadway show I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.
THE STORY: Nick is a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey. He sees all four of his grandparents every Sunday for dinner. This is routine until he has to tell them that he's been offered a dream job—across the country in Seattle – that would take him away from his beloved, but annoying, grandparents. Thus begins a scheme by the four grandparents to keep Nick around; a scheme which includes bringing to Sunday dinner the lovely—and single—Caitlin O'Hare as bait. Will it work?

From the Director
The play is fast-paced, with lots of back-and-forth dialogue and monologues by several characters. It is energetic, broadly funny, and also touching –it’s about family. Think Golden Girls meets Everybody Loves Raymond meets On Golden Pond. The ideal cast will have strong memorization skills and a good sense of both comic --and serious-- delivery and timing. Performances will take place in the new ArtsLab in the Auer Center, on Main Street—an intimate space with an estimated house size of 200 for this production.
SETTING: The Gianelli home in Hoboken, New Jersey. TIME: Early-mid 1990’s
