ABOUT THE PROJECT
Ayumi Shafer by Isabel Fajardo
The project titled, Our Home aspires to amplify the voices of the AAPI community by exploring their family traditions and personal experiences living in the Midwest. Shafer is collaborating with photographic artist Sarah Weiss, and they hope to be invited into select families’ homes to capture candid and genuine moments in each family, along with an informal interview. They will touch on topics of culture, immigration, intergenerational living, the pandemic, life in the Midwest, and racial tensions in America today. Select photographs will be printed on large silk fabrics to be hung from the ceiling of the performance space.
Shafer, in collaboration with the movers, will create movement based on the themes that emerge from the interview and photographs. Dancers will be moving through the set designed by the fabric prints and the movement will be interwoven throughout the space. In hopes to create connections within the AAPI, dance, photographic, and art communities, the project will work through themes of intergenerational households, passing down family traditions, racial tensions, and a global pandemic. The hope is to share these experiences with others in the broader community.
