July 10th and July 12th The Far Off Broadway Players are holding auditions for their October production of “Frankenstein” by Nick Dear. A genre-defining work for both science fiction and Gothic literature, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus, grapples with the moral implications and fallout from a dogged pursuit of scientific achievement. While most audience members may be familiar with the story through classic horror movies (or their spoofs), Nick Dear’s 2011 adaptation brings into focus the ethical conundrums of Shelley’s original fable.
The original London production — starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller alternating as Frankenstein and the Creature — became an international sensation when it was broadcast worldwide. Centering the action around Frankenstein’s monster, the adaptation emphasizes intense human emotions and complex relationships over shock or gory spectacle.
There are 20+ characters in the play, but we are casting 12 adults and 1 boy for our production. Several actors will be playing more than one character throughout the show. So, when you see a character such as Gretel followed by another name in the in the show you will be playing both characters. The characters are as follows:
1. The Creature – Adult Male (25-45), Physical, Demanding Role.
2. Victor Frankenstein a scientist - Adult Male (25-40), Principal Role.
3. Gretel a prostitute/Clarice Elizabeths Maid - Adult Female (21-40)
4. Gustav a beggar/ Monsieur Frankenstein Victor’s father - Adult Male (55+)
5. Klaus a beggar/Servant 2 a Frankenstein household servant - Adult Male (25-55)
6. De Lacey a blind man - Adult Male (60+), Principal Role.
7. Felix DeLacey’s son/ A Constable/A Prostitute’s Client - Adult Male (30-40)
8. Agatha – DeLacey’s daughter-in-law/Servant 1- a Frankenstein household servant - Adult Female (18-35)
9. The Female Creature - Adult Female (21-40)
10. Elizabeth Lavenza Victor’s fiancée – Adult Female (18-25)
11. William Frankenstein Victor’s brother – Young Boy (8-13)
12. Ewan an Orkney islander/Townsman 1 – Adult Male (45+)
13. Rab Ewan’s nephew/Townsman 2 – Adult Male (25+)
Auditions will be held Monday July 10th and Wednesday July 12th in the Casablanca Room of the Historic Plaza Theatre, 115 East Main Street, Glasgow, Kentucky. Each evening will be broken down into 10 minute time slots, so you will need to register for your audition in advance. Visit
