Flashbacks reveal the substance of his life which will become the material for his next film: a musical version of the Casanova story.

Nine was created and written by Maury Yeston as a class-project in Lehman Engel's BMI Music Theatre Workshop in 1973. It was later developed with a book by Mario Fratti, and then again with a book by Arthur Kopit, music and lyrics by Maury Yeston. The story is based also on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical film 8_. Nine opened on Broadway in 1982 directed by Tommy Tune and choreographed by Thommie Walsh.
Nine was the winner of five 1982 Tony Awards including Best Musical and again as Best Revival of a Musical in 2003. It was adapted into a major motion picture directed by Rob Marshall in 2009.
