Synopsis: The play braids together two stories, connected by and to the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Nita, granddaughter of a perpetrator, struggles to unearth the truth of the massacre in history. Miranda discovers she is a survivor and struggles to discover the truth of her family’s involvement. Together, their stories tally the cost of refusing to face the truth.

Actor A (F): Nita;
Actor B (F): Miranda;
Actor C (F): Saphrona; [If a 4th W] Actor C+ (F): Charity, Mrs. Carter, Reen
Actor D (M): Nephi, Samuel;
Actor E (M): Lister, Jeremy, Br. Anderson.
Nephi: An elderly man. Doubles with Samuel.
Lister: Son-in-law to Nephi; uncle to Nita. Doubles with Jeremy and Br. Anderson.
Nita: A Mormon housewife who also happens to be an extraordinary historian. We first see her in her early twenties, but for most of the play she is middle-aged, in her forties and fifties.
Miranda: A young woman in her early twenties.
Saphrona: A middle-aged woman. She is the first of Samuel’s polygamous wives. She could speak with an accent, New England or British. It is recommended that Saphrona not double, but if the cast is limited to three women, then the actor playing her doubles with Charity, Mrs. Carter, and Reen.
Samuel: A man in late middle age; he is a polygamist. He could speak with an accent, New England or British.
Jeremy: A man in early middle age. He is courting Miranda.
Charity: Nita’s sister. If there are four women, she doubles with Reen and Mrs. Carter.
Reen: Rhymes with “bean.” Nickname for Maurine Whipple, another author and former student of Nita’s.
Mrs. Carter: The president of the DUP (Daughters of Utah Pioneers).
Brother Anderson: A higher-up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
