A Series of poetic monologues to be accompanied by dance movements and music, a form originated by Ntozake Shange who coined the term choreopoem. FOR COLORED BOYZ... tells the stories of 5 men who have suffered oppression in a racist society.
As a choreopoem, the piece is a series of 31 separate poems and scenes choreographed to music that weaves interconnected stories of struggle, empowerment, identity, and loss into a complex representation of brotherhood. The cast consists of five nameless Black men only identified by the colors they are assigned. They are the Man in red, Man in orange, Man in green, Man in blue, and the Man in black. Subjects from race, love, hyper-masculinity, sexuality, and community are tackled.
