Casting a satire about an imaginary Southern town, where all the black people have suddenly disappeared. Infants are crying because they are being tended to by strange parents. The Mayor pleads for the President, Governor, and the NAACP to send him "a jackpot of jigaboos." "Day of Absence" is a provocative play presented as a reverse minstrel show (an almost entirely Black cast painted in white-face). The commentary on white privilege and white identity in the absence of people to oppress is quite revolutionary.
We are casting the role of Announcer, the only “bonafide white actor” the play. All other characters are Black in white-face. The announcer can be any gender and is a stereotypical television personality.
Rehearsals will begin February 18.
The production opens on March 23 and runs for 3 shows.
Actor’s compensation is $250
Auditions are by appointment, which can be made by emailing Ashley Oliver at Ashley.m.oliver@hotmail.com
