CAMELOT - Drury Lane Theatre

Note from Director: While it will be set in magical-Medieval times, this CAMELOT will be a very progressive, sexy, almost-contemporary telling of the classic musical.

First Rehearsal: 10/6/14
First Public Performance: 10/20/14
Contemplated Closing: 1/4/15

Seeking:
Strong Male and Female Actor/Singers and Strong Males with stage combat experience (broadsword, dagger, etc)
All actors should be aggressively fearless, ultra-creative, in excellent shape, and have great command of language and ideas.
All ethnicities are encouraged to attend. But we are not interested in stock types nor traditional, formal versions of these characters.

Prepare 32 bars in the style of the show. Contemporary-Classic material would also be appropriate for this production (i.e. Guettel, La Chiusa, Jason Robert Brown, Ricky Ian Gordon) Come with cuts in your key and book in case you are asked to sing something else.

ARTHUR (about 35 years old) Handsome and sexy; an everyman soul in a charismatic persona. He becomes King of England by surprising happenstance but then struggles to create, implement, maintain, and rise to an ideal order of chivalry and empathetic rule. He is a rich and complex character, cautiously idealistic, with warm and mischievous humor. Actor must have a huge command of language and formidable presence. He is rapturously in love with Guenevere but equally as devoted to Lancelot. Actor may appear shirtless and will engage in considerable stage combat. (Baritone)

GUENEVERE (about 25 years old) Radiantly beautiful, very progressive, wildly spirited, crafty and passionate, with a devoted but conflicted heart. She initially resents being gifted to be Queen, but is won-over by Arthur’s genuine charm and humility. She emboldens Arthur to become an ideal King, through forward thinking and governance, but pines for the passions and desires of common folk. Idealistically innocent, her deep love for Arthur is only matched and challenged by her overwhelming passion for Lancelot. (Effortless Soprano-Mix)

LANCELOT (about 30 years old) An abundantly self-assured French knight who is an obsessively committed disciple of Arthur and his Round Table. He is extraordinarily handsome and has an outstanding physique. His great prowess as a knight is only enhanced by his otherworldly spiritual and healing abilities. Keenly compassionate and extraordinarily romantic/chivalrous, he falls desperately in love with Guenevere in spite of his true devotion to Arthur. There is not a stitch of Gaston nor Milos Gloriousis in him; he is funny only through his pure earnestness. Actor will appear shirtless and will engage in extensive stage combat. (Soaring, magnificent Baritone)

MERLYN / PELLINORE (aged 45-55) One actor plays both roles. MERLYN: The infamous, old, wise wizard who ages backwards. Having tutored Arthur since boyhood he scrambles to guide him as King and warn him of danger before Merlyn regresses past remembering the future. A cross between Dumbledore and Gandalf. PELLINORE: A bad-ass, very funny and eccentric, no-nonsense old knight who, in search of his lost Kingdom, becomes a dedicated confidant and friend to Arthur. Actor will participate in considerable stage combat. (Baritone)

MORDRED (late teens - early 20s) The truly evil bastard son of Arthur, sired when the King was young, naïve, and unwillingly bewitched. He is as amusing as he is unlikable. Quirky, impish, and sneaky, he facilitates the famous love triangle that takes down the Kingdom and leads the same rebellion for his personal gain. Actor will participate in some stage combat. (Baritone)

ENSEMBLE MEN Seeking ultra-masculine, ultra-aggressive, wildly passionate, handsome and well-built men. Classical training and fight-experience a plus. ALL will participate in extensive stage combat. Acrobatics also a plus but not necessary; some will appear shirtless. Principal understudies will be cast from ensemble as will significant supporting roles. All must have strong voices and sing in tune.

ENSEMBLE WOMEN Seeking beautiful young women. Must be equally accomplished singers and dancers. One will understudy Guenevere and play Nimue.
