Alice:
Walt’s wife, same age, mother of Lee and William. Uneducated but idealistic, self-respecting and highly principled.
Lee:
Thirty or thereabouts. Hurt and hurting, tender and angry. Takes after his parents in moral sensitivity, but is also self-lacerating and sarcastic. Throws barbs at people, then smothers his victims with tenderness, yet anyone who knows him thoroughly, loves him helplessly.
Popeye:
Same age as Lee. A side-kick of Lee’s who is not of their blood or their neighborhood. Tries to be a good fisherman. Worships and respects Lee and his family.
William:
The youngest son, 25-30 years old, bright, smiles easily. Intelligent, inventive, adventurous and fun-loving, yet his profound respect for the fighting traditions of his forbears makes him a stubborn fighter.
Peter:
40-50 years old, a ringmaster of sorts, who brings the drama to life. He evokes characters, a world and its problems. He is a friend to these people, one who has known them intimately. His privilege of seeing them from a chronicler’s distance, something that irritates Lee. A poet and a fisherman. Peter loves the sea and the written word. Because of this, he is their witness and their hope.
