Stephen Sondheim’s A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC – Opens April 2016
Show Overview:
A Little Night Music is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night, it involves the romantic lives of several couples. Its title is a literal English translation of the German name for Mozart's Serenade No. 13 for strings in G major, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. The musical includes the popular song Send in the Clowns.
Desiree Armfeldt, an actress, is seeing Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm who is married to Charlotte Malcolm. Frederik Egerman, Desiree's past lover, is married to Anne, who is half his age. Henrik Egerman, Frederik's son, who is also a divinity student, loves his stepmother, Anne. When all of these people end up going for a weekend in the country, the lovers and ex-lovers attempt to do the unthinkable in the name of love. The entire story is punctuated by a quintet of “Liebeslieder” singers acting as a Greek chorus.
