SYNOPSIS

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM is a non-stop laugh-fest musical in which Pseudolus, a crafty slave, struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan named Philia, for his young master, Hero, in exchange for freedom. The plot twists and turns with cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors, and a showgirl or two. This unforgettable, hysterical musical allows a terrific ensemble of comedic actors to shine--"something for everyone, a comedy tonight!"

PREPARATION
--------------------
Please prepare a one minute comedic monologue, 16 bars of your audition song of choice, dress comfortably and be prepared to move. Also, please be prepared to read from the script.
Audition with songs that have a Vaudeville and even Burlesque flavor. Please bring your sheet music. Songs from the show are permitted. The male performers will have to learn the old-soft-shoe. The six courtesans should move like Las Vegas showgirls.
Really preferred for "Proteans" to have some tumbling, juggling, clowning, or mime experience, but not required.

CHARACTERS (Available Roles)

Some roles can played by either gender.
CHARACTERS
• Pseudolus (baritone) The clever slave at the center of it all (25-40). Audition with any musical “Con Man” song. “Trouble?” The Good Old Days?”
• Hysterium (baritone) His hysterical counterpart (25-40) Audition with a musical comedy character song. e.g., “Sit Down, Yer Rockin’ the Boat?”
• Hero (tenor) The young lover that all such comedies must have (18-20). Audition with a some love ballad
• Philia (soprano) The most fetching other half of the young lover equation (18-20). Audition with a ballad
• Senex (baritone) Hero’s past-his-prime, hen-pecked father (50 plus) e.g., “September Song?”
• Domina (mezzo) The most Republican of hen-peckers
(40plus). Audition with a steamy torch song. e.g., “I’m a Redhot Mama, But I’m Blue for You?”
• Marcus Lycus (baritone---or mezzo, as Marca Lycus) An oily procurer…or madam (30 plus) e.g., “A Pretty Girl is Like A Melody?”
• Miles Glorious (baritone) A great captain, full or preening braggadocio, yet afraid of heights (30 plus), Any bombastic patriotic song delivered full blast will do for the audition. e.g., “Give Me Some Men Who Are Stout Hearted men?”
• Erronius (doesn’t sing) The quintessential old man, half blind and befuddled, yet carrying on (as ancient as possible without a walker)’
THE COURTESANS
• Gymnasia, “a giant stage on which a thousand dramas may be played.”
• Tintinabula “a ringing performance.”
• Vibrata “for those of you who want to take a trip to the wild side.”
• Geminae “a matched set of twins dancing in clever entwinement.”
• Panacea “You there, oh there’s so much of you there.”
THE PROTEANS are three performers who “do the work of thirty.” They play pirates, roman soldiers, citizens, eunuchs, sailors, and house slave/ luggage bearers. They can be male or female. All have lines and they are almost always on stage. Preferred if the three proteans had some tumbling, juggling, clowning, or mime experience, although not required.
