A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL - The Rose Theatre


The Rose To Host Auditions On September 8 and 9, 2014
For Its Production of “A Christmas Story: The Musical”

The Rose Theater will host an audition for adult and youth roles in its
2014 production, A Christmas Story: The Musical on Monday, September 8 at 6:00 PM and
Tuesday, September 9 at 6:00 PM with callbacks on Thursday, September 11. Youth actors
should be at least eight years of age. Adult actors over the age of eighteen are encouraged
to arrive after 7:00 PM for these open calls. Actors of all types are welcome to audition and
must come to The Rose Theater, 2001 Farnam Street. Minority actors are wanted for lead
roles. Auditionees should prepare a short song selection of 8-16 bars and be prepared to
dance. Not all adult roles will need to sing, so a monologue is an acceptable substitute for
a song.

Actors must be available for weeknight and weekend rehearsals and performances
between October 29 and December 28. No performances will be held December 22-25.
This is a paid position for adult actors. Minority actors are highly encouraged to audition.

About the Show
Join Ralphie Parker on his quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas gifts – a Red Ryder
air rifle. This musical adaptation of the beloved movie brings all the classic laughs of Flick
getting his tongue stuck to a flagpole, Dad receiving his special award, a disastrous visit to
Santa, and many more to life onstage. Bring your family together this winter to experience
the universal triumphs of childhood as seen through the eyes of a very special 10-year-old.


Character Breakdown
• Jean Shepherd: the author of the story, with a biting sense of humor and delightfully honest
way of describing childhood. Does not need to sing.
• Ralphie: 9-14 years old. A rambunctious kid with wild fantasies.
• Mother: Ralphie and Randy’s mother.
• The Old Man: Ralphie and Randy’s dad, a creative user of non-curse words and lover of
major awards.
• Schwartz: 10 years old, Ralphie’s friend.
• Flick: 10 years old, Ralphie’s friend who gets his tongue stuck to a flagpole.
• Esther Jane: 10 years old, the smartest kid in the class.
• Scut Farkus: 10-16 years old, a bully.
• Grover Dill: 10-16 years old, Scut’s sidekick.
• Miss Shields: Ralphie’s teacher who cares about margins and themes a lot.
• Higbees’ Santa Claus: an unhappy Santa Claus
• Ensemble of children/teenagers: who play classmates and dancers throughout the show.
• Ensemble of adults: who play parents, policemen, mall elves, and dancers throughout
the show.
