Middle School South's "Beauty and the Beast" Production: A Must-See Performance
Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" is a beloved musical that needs no introduction. If you're familiar with the story, love the characters, and adore the music, then you'll be thrilled by Howell Middle School South's theatrical production. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature, the stage version includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. The original Broadway production was a smashing success, running for over thirteen years and receiving nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.
The story of "Beauty and the Beast" follows Belle, a charming young woman played by Kaitlyn Waterman (8th grader), who resides in a provincial town. Her sweet and lovely voice shines in the beautiful song, "Home." The Beast, who was once a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress, is played by Brennan Boyce (8th grader). His portrayal of the Beast hits the sweet spot between frightening and empathetic, bringing beautiful poignancy to his rendition of "If I Can't Love Her." The curse can only be lifted if the Beast can learn to love and be loved. However, time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.
The cast brings each familiar character to life in their own unique way. Olivia Huszar (8th grade), as Mrs. Potts, is warm and motherly, and her rendition of the highlight song "Tale as Old as Time" is perfect. Her little shadow Chip, played by Callie Mamana (6th grade), is equally adorable. Jameson Green (6th grade) as Cogsworth and Anthony Lisi (8th grade) as Lumiere are a strong comedic duo, playing off each other with impeccable comedic timing. Lisi more than rises to the high bar of "Be Our Guest."
As the villainous Gaston, played by Jake Fusco (8th grade), impresses with his strong, resonant voice in each of his songs, his sidekick Lefou played by Joseph Serzan, (6th grade) brings hilarious contrast to the swagger through his energetic physical comedy.
The members of the cast ensemble fill every scene with incredible skill, executing the dynamic dance and choreography flawlessly. However, perhaps the most impressive element of the show is the costumes. "Be Our Guest" is a positive buffet of costumes and routines as the ensemble comes in and out as an ever-increasing collection of enchanted objects, leading up to an energetic high-kicking finale.
